From the Interim Pastor – August 2019

I have come to think of pastoral transitions in stages. The first stage is when the pastor announces that he or she is leaving, and the congregation makes preparations to say goodbye. The second stage is self-study, where the congregation reflects on its identity and mission. The second stage in ELCA congregations ends with the submission of the Ministry Site Profile. The third stage is the actual search for new pastoral leadership. That is the stage LCGS is in now. Then comes the final stage, where a call is issued, and a new pastor is welcomed into the life of[Continue Reading]

Sara’s Notes – August 2019

As I write this we here in Des Moines and elsewhere in Iowa are looking forward to the State Fair. Higher temps are always anticipated for those days. But forecast to currently come in next few days is high heat with a possible high temp here in Des Moines of 102 degrees.   Wow! A newscast reported the last time Iowa temps hit that high was the summer of 1936.  Would you believe? I remember!  I don’t recall anyone, regardless of income, having even one fan in their homes.      I am going to assume, perhaps in[Continue Reading]

Hymn Sing – July 28th 2019

The Worship and Music committee has designated Sunday, July 28th as Hymn Sing Sunday where YOU suggest your favorite hymns and the committee will select the most requested hymns.   Let’s see how many we can sing at this service!  There will be no communion as Pastor Duane will be away on that Sunday.

Thank You’s July 2019

Sara’s notes – July 2019

We waited so long for summer and suddenly it is well into the season. July 4th, Independence Day, comes on a Thursday this year so I would hazard a guess that some businesses may not be open on Friday or many will take it as a vacation day so they can have a four day weekend. Summer attendance at church services has been rather scant but it may really show on that weekend.  At our services we will probably remember the day of our country’s independence and sing some appropriate songs.  Many of us will celebrate by going on picnics,[Continue Reading]

FROM THE INTERIM PASTOR – July 2019

A change to worship coming! Beginning on Sunday, July 7, we will resume the practice of sharing the peace of the Lord in our Sunday worship. The Sharing of the Peace was discontinued at Good Shepherd some time ago during a flu epidemic, when there was understandable concern about the spread of the virus. The main reason for sharing the peace is biblical. In Matthew 5:23-24, Jesus says “So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go, first be[Continue Reading]

A NOTE OF THANKS! – from Pastor Miller July 2019

I want to take this opportunity to thank the leaders and members of the congregation for the gift card, and the reception held in honor of the 40th Anniversary of my ordination into the Office of the Ministry of Word and Sacrament. The reception was held on June 30 between services. My actual date of ordination was July 1. It was so kind of you to honor me on this occasion, even though I haven’t been and won’t be here very long. Thank you for your support and expressions of gratitude for my ministry with and among you. In Christ,[Continue Reading]
