Notes from Sara – October 2019

I have an e-mail friend whom I met on mission trips to Jamaica a number of years ago. Every once in a while she sends me a “gem”. I received some recently. No author is given for these latest words which I felt compelled to share. Once all villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of the prayer all the people gathered but only one came with an umbrella. THAT’S FAITH! When you throw babies in the air they laugh because they know you will catch them. THAT’S TRUST! Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the[Continue Reading]

A Few More Details About Calling a Pastor

The vote for calling a pastor is by written ballot. At least two-thirds of the Voting Members present and voting must vote in favor of the call for a Letter of Call to be issued. The vote is on both the call to the pastor and the compensation package. It is a vote to call the candidate at a given compensation level. Some basic responsibilities for the congregation and the pastor are also included in the letter of call. If the congregation votes to approve the call, the Letter of Call is sent to the Office of the Bishop for[Continue Reading]

Notes from Sara – September 2019

Where did summer go? It took it so long to get here and now it is fading away.  But — This givesus the opportunity to “get back into the swing of things”.  There will be a lot going on at LCGS and we hope and trust that we will have a fuller house at our services. On September 8th we’ll start off with a meet and greet a candidate for a new pastor between the 8:00 and 10:30 services. We trust that we will have many members there at 9:30 to meet him.  This is also Pastor Miller’s last day with us so would like[Continue Reading]

From the Interim Pastor – September 2019

As you are hopefully aware by now, you will have opportunity to meet the candidate for call to be pastor of Good Shepherd at a Meet and Greet between services on September 8. The congregational meeting will take place after one worship service on September 15. My last Sunday as you Interim Pastor will also be September 8. I will formally begin my duties as Interim Pastor at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, Iowa the following day, September 9. Everybody knows you need a pastor. But what do you need a pastor for? As you know, I preached on that[Continue Reading]

From the Interim Pastor – August 2019

I have come to think of pastoral transitions in stages. The first stage is when the pastor announces that he or she is leaving, and the congregation makes preparations to say goodbye. The second stage is self-study, where the congregation reflects on its identity and mission. The second stage in ELCA congregations ends with the submission of the Ministry Site Profile. The third stage is the actual search for new pastoral leadership. That is the stage LCGS is in now. Then comes the final stage, where a call is issued, and a new pastor is welcomed into the life of[Continue Reading]

Sara’s Notes – August 2019

As I write this we here in Des Moines and elsewhere in Iowa are looking forward to the State Fair. Higher temps are always anticipated for those days. But forecast to currently come in next few days is high heat with a possible high temp here in Des Moines of 102 degrees.   Wow! A newscast reported the last time Iowa temps hit that high was the summer of 1936.  Would you believe? I remember!  I don’t recall anyone, regardless of income, having even one fan in their homes.      I am going to assume, perhaps in[Continue Reading]
