As I write this we here in Des Moines and elsewhere in Iowa are looking forward to the State Fair. Higher temps are always anticipated for those days. But forecast to currently come in next few days is high heat with a possible high temp here in Des Moines of 102 degrees. Wow! A newscast reported the last time Iowa temps hit that high was the summer of 1936. Would you believe? I remember! I don’t recall anyone, regardless of income, having even one fan in their homes.
I am going to assume, perhaps in error, that many of our members are campers or weekend travelers or ????? Why? Our church attendance has been down quite a bit this summer and you know what? We miss you! If this hot weather is continuing when you receive August’s newsletter, why not think about coming next Sunday. The A/C at church works very well, and sometimes cools too much for this old soul but then that’s why sweaters were created.
What have you missed? First of all, the camaraderie of worshipping and singing and being with other parishioners. Yes! You missed the hymn sing on July 28th with all kinds of good songs and hymns that we, the congregation, selected. You know, Luther was a musician and a believer that music should be generously used in our services to praise and thank the Lord and bring us together in a commonality of our beliefs. If you go through the hymnals you probably can be reminded of many Biblical passages being expressed in the words and the tone of the music. There are songs and hymns for all situations from happiness, friendship, sorrow, comfort, adoration, etc.
We hope to see more of our people, particularly younger ones, youth and children soon. If August goes as fast as the whole summer has to date, the fair will be over, school restarted and we will have our September Rally Sunday. What a joy it would be to see our sanctuary more filled and hearing the joyful sounds of our services and the worshipers from 90+ to the wail of a newborn. Come and join us and make joyful noises unto the Lord and one another.
“Come, let us all unite to sing, God is love, God is love. Let heav’n and earth their praises bring; God is love. God is love. Let ev’ry soul from sin awake, Each in his heart sweet music make, And sing with us for Jesus’ sake, God is love! God is love! How happy is our portion here! God is love, God is love.”
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Teach and admonish one another in all wisdom, and sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16
